Herb Study: The Common Dandelion 

Name Origin: French, dent de lion meaning Lion's Tooth 

A member of the Daisy family, this lovely "weed" can be used to treat many common ailments. Though it's most commonly brewed in tea, the entire Dandelion is edible, containing nutrients within the flower, stem, and leaves. It can also be extracted to create a tonic, or roasted and brewed for a coffee-like beverage.

  • Vitamins A, B,  C, D, & K

  • Fiber, Potassium, Iron, & Calcium 

  • Zinc, Magnesium & Phosphorus

Uses:

Having been harvested for thousands and thousands of years, some have used Dandelion to treat blood disorders, skin infections, and digestive disorders. Regular consumption of Dandelion root tea can help boost your immune system, balance bacteria within your digestive tract, and help remove toxins from the liver and kidneys.

  • Lowers blood pressure & cholesterol 

  • Decreases inflammation & related pain 

  • Slows the rate of cancerous cell growth 

  • Regulates blood sugar & insulin (hope for Diabetes)

Before going out and picking the first one you see, remember that they are considered pesty plants and have likely been sprayed. Your local health food store may have raw bundles of fresh or dried flowers, and they will certainly have a version of Dandelion flower or root tea. Those with sensitive systems or allergies should use precaution when trying Dandelion recipes, it can cause reactions.
